People of the Land

The creation of Kenneth Mugabi’s People of the Land marked a historic, soulful shift in contemporary Ugandan music, engineered and produced by Joses Arins Emanzi. Born from a chance encounter at the Kampala National Theatre, the album became an intense six-month masterclass in sonic mind-reading and cross-genre innovation. Driven by Joses’ background as a live performer, the production bridged the gap between raw, acoustic live music and commercial, radio-ready precision. Despite facing exhausting industry politics, rushed deadlines, acoustic shifts, and a tragic hard drive crash, People of the Land remains an undisputed Ugandan masterpiece, celebrated for its premium, timeless, and unfiltered cultural soundscapes.

The Case Study

The Creative Challenge: Merging Two Worlds Before People of the Land, the Ugandan music landscape maintained a sharp divide between authentic live music and commercial radio-ready hits. The core objective was to create a hybrid sound that captured Kenneth Mugabi's distinct, intimate live identity without sacrificing radio viability. This challenge required meticulous arrangement and deep intuition. Because Joses was transitioning from the stage to the studio, he possessed a rare vocabulary that allowed him to read Kenneth’s mind, complete his musical sentences, and build dense, energetic tracks around a single acoustic guitar line. However, the creative flow ran parallel to heavy logistical hurdles. An disruptive temporary management figure accelerated the release timeline, robbing Joses of the time he needed to fine-tune the final mix and master. Compounding this, the studio underwent a physical relocation mid-project—flipping the control room and live room—which disrupted the familiar room acoustics and heavily impacted critical mixing decisions. The Mulika Approach & Solution The production became an intense, nocturnal labor of love. Utilizing his signature fast turnaround time, Joses pulled relentless all-nighters. Kenneth would track his guitars and vocals in the evening, and by the time he woke up, Joses would have elevated the track into a sprawling arrangement. To achieve the ultimate premium hybrid sound, Joses coordinated a phenomenal lineup of legendary session musicians: Keys: Ronnie Bukenya Guitars: Aloysius Migadde Bass: Lawrence Matovu Traditional Instruments: Keith Mugenyi Saxophone: Happy Kyazze From the breakout TV theme song Sanyu and the tourism-targeted title track People of the Land (featuring rapper Mwana Weika), to the hit collaboration Wuyue with Izabell, Joses breathed fresh air into the industry. To protect the premium, high-art feel of the project, he made a deliberate decision to leave out a producer tagline or audio watermark. The Results & Impact People of the Land stands as an iconic pillar in Kenneth Mugabi’s catalog and a legendary credit for Mulika Studios. But the triumph came with immense personal costs. A lack of proper public credit at the album launch left Joses deeply frustrated and burned out, prompting a temporary step back from production. The heartache was amplified shortly after when his hard drive suffered a catastrophic crash, permanently locking away the session files and preventing any future remixing. Yet, like a child sent into the world, the music took on a life of its own. It became an instant classic, lauded by industry peers and fans alike. For Mulika Studios, People of the Land remains a proud testament to raw passion, unyielding soul, and the definitive blueprint of our premium production philosophy.
