Makula
Coming off our early success with television series and feature films, Mulika Studios secured the audio post-production contract for Makula following an initial consultation at Karism. Directed by the ambitious and deeply driven Nisha Kalema, the project became a masterclass in adaptive post-production. Joses Arins Emanzi spearheaded the music composition, while collaborating with assistant sound designer Kalema Allawih to deliver the sound design and Foley under tight physical studio constraints. Despite an evolving script and an endless cycle of picture cuts, our relentless dedication turned Makula into a global triumph. The film went on to win Best Picture and the UFF Icon Award, alongside sweeping international film festivals from Zanzibar to Toronto.

The Case Study
Makula was fueled by intense passion and ambition, which meant the creative vision for the film was constantly transforming. As the script evolved, the film underwent an unprecedented number of picture cuts during the post-production phase. For a composer and audio team, this meant constantly conforming the entire sonic framework to entirely new visual timelines, a task that required massive technical patience and precise organization. Finding the definitive emotional core of the score was a moving target, as we had to ensure the music evolved alongside the changing narrative structures. Furthermore, the final scene arrived with severely compromised production audio that could not be salvaged; with no time remaining for Automated Dialogue Replacement (ADR), the team had to rely on creative mixing and ambient sound design to seamlessly carry the story across the finish line. The Mulika Approach & Solution Rather than buckling under the weight of the endless revisions, Mulika Studios leaned into a highly collaborative, relationship-first approach. Joses Arins Emanzi and Kalema Allawih turned late-night studio sessions with Nisha into productive, high-energy workshops. Operating out of our original, smaller studio space at the time, performing and recording physical Foley required immense creativity and spatial optimization. Joses composed an evocative, custom original score that anchored the film's shifting emotional arcs, complemented by a few licensed tracks. After delivering the comprehensive sound design, Foley, and the core 2.0 stereo mix, we partnered with Andrew Ahura at Quad-A to finalize the project’s specialized surround mix for its cinematic release. The Results & Impact The incredible resilience and tireless hours poured into Makula paid off exponentially. The movie became a massive critical success and an invaluable milestone that significantly elevated the portfolio and reputation of Mulika Studios. Its sweeping run across prestigious platforms—including major wins at the Uganda Film Festival (UFF), the Zanzibar International Film Festival, and screenings in Toronto, Canada—solidified Mulika Studios as a premium facility capable of anchoring international, award-winning cinema.
To deliver a premium end-product, we leveraged our state-of-the-art treated studios and the latest in digital-analog hybrid hardware. Every stage of production, from location tracking to the final audio stems delivery, was run through strict quality checking to ensure broadcast standard output.
